Microsoft have finally announced the pricing options for their new motion-sensing controller peripheral, Kinect, as well as available bundle options.
We, as South African consumers, will have to choose between one of the following:
- Stand alone unit - R1999.99 (includes Kinect Adventures)
- Bundle purchase - R3699,99 (include the new “slim” Xbox 360, Wi-Fi capability, matte-wireless controller, Kinect unit, plus Kinect Adventures)
But before you get all excited there are a few factors that need to be taken into consideration before you run off and deplete your bank balance. Microsoft seem to be trying to slip this one past us... Hmmm...
Downs:
- The Xbox console included in the bundle will not include the 250GB hard drive, but will rather have 4GB of flash storage built in to the motherboard. Basically, what this means is that you'll have to fork out more for additional storage.
- Alternatively, you can buy the standalone new Xbox 360 'slim' for R2399.99. This is the 4GB version; there is no word yet on pricing for the 250GB variant.
- There will only be 15 titles available for purchase when the Kinect hits the shelves in August.
Ups:
- The Kinect won't require an external power source if used in conjunction with the new Xbox 360 'slim'.
I'd say the bundle deal would be the wiser choice, considering the new Xbox console and its built-in Wi-Fi. Less stress and mess for considerably less moola. But overall, I'd say it would be a better decision to wait until they start shipping the 250GB variant to our shores. Hopefully by then the Kinect will have built up its title-list as well. Happy shopping!

I must say i'm more amped for the Xbox Slim Than the Kinetic package.
Its pretty much a Wii on steroids with a better gpu and no hand held controller. I'll have to actually play it to be amped i guess.
What you say is true. I actually read an interesting article the other day which stated that controller-less gaming was actually a step backwards for gaming tech, rather than a step forwards (which is what Microsoft are obviously aiming for).
If you think about it Developers should be trying to reduce the amount of kinetic action between body and the on-screen action. This is why a button works so well.
Where as a button is: think > push > action, the KINECT is: think > move body > action, and that's not even considering the alleged 'capture-lag' that the Kinect is apparently prone to.
Guess we'll have to see :) Thanks for commenting!
what a nice review.the most thing i like about your review are the technicality and financial aspect of it.though,i like xbox360 slim but who knows when kinect comes.
